Wildlife

Wildlife abounds on Kangaroo Island and Penneshaw is no exception.  Wallabies, kangaroos, echidnas, possums, koalas, penguins, goannas and maybe even the odd snake are all part of the island experience. Add to that seals, dolphins, pelicans, platypus, eagles and emus and this wildlife experience is truly hard to beat.

In the evenings you are likely to see many wallabies surrounding the property, some even venturing into the township itself.

We are very lucky to enjoy rare sightings of the endangered Glossy Black Cockatoo at Hog Bay Hill.  These birds feed on the cones of the sheoak trees that surround the property, making a distinctive fire cracker like sound whilst extracting the seeds. A successful recovery program is in place to boost numbers on the island.

Penneshaw is home to a colony of Fairy Penguins. These cute birds can be seen (and heard) in the township along the coastline most evenings. The Penneshaw Penguin Centre conducts informative and entertaining tours nightly adjacent Hog Bay Beach.

Kangaroo Island is Australia’s third largest island and with so much to see and do we suggest a minimum three days to see the main attractions or ideally a week to really explore the island.

Many of the main natural tourist attractions such as Seal Bay, Remarkable Rocks, and Admirals Arch are located within National Parks. Tours are available and entrance fees apply to some locations. More information and passes are available from the Gateway Visitor Information Centre located at Penneshaw, or the Flinders Chase Visitor Centre.

Other activities available on the island include bushwalking, beaches, fishing charters, nocturnal tours, winery cellar doors, hands-on wildlife parks, local art galleries, museums, cafes, restaurants, racing carnivals, bird watching, pelican feeding, lighthouse tours, look-outs, cooking demonstrations, produce outlets, marine tours, picnics, sand hills, bicycle hire, lavender farm, kayaking and the list goes on.
